To apply for an F-1/J-1 visa, you first need documents that prove your eligibility. This document is often referred to as a “certificate of title”. For F-1 students, the Affidavit of Eligibility is called the I-20. For J-1 students, it is called DS-2019. To apply for an I-20 or DS-2019 from OIA, you must first complete the Initial Application Form I-20/DS-2019. You will be sent a link and detailed instructions for this request in your enrollment email.

Once you receive your I-20 or DS-2019 from OIA, you can apply for a student visa sticker. This process includes the following steps:
Students who receive an initial I-20 or DS-2019 from OIA must pay the SEVIS fee to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and retain proof of fees paid (such as payment receipts) to present on the visa application. The SEVIS fee is separate from the visa application fee you pay at the embassy or consulate to obtain an F-1/J-1 visa.
If you are applying for an I-20, you can apply for an F-1 visa up to 120 days before the “program start date” listed on the I-20. If you applied for DS-2019, you can apply for a J-1 visa as soon as you receive DS-2019 (even if it is 120 days before the program start date).
