With all the border-closing rhetoric coming out of the White House over the past two years, it’s no wonder that the growth of America’s international student population has stalled. Although the United States still hosts more than a million foreign students, first-time international undergraduates in the United States sank 6.6% in 2017, according to the IIE, a nonprofit organization that tracks international exchange in education. .

“Of course there is merit [to that argument], but it is not the only factor,” says Marcelo Barros, founder of the international student consulting firm International Advantage.
“The launch started years ago,” says Rajika Bhandari, policy advisor at IIE. “The flow of international students is beginning to slow.”

In 2016, students at U.S. colleges paid an average annual tuition of $8,202 at public schools and $21,189 at private schools, according to the Student Loan Association, a subsidiary of Lending Tree. That number is often higher for international students, who usually do not receive generous aid packages.
Both sums are astronomical compared to those of most other countries; The United States has the second highest university graduation rates among countries with top-ranked universities (the United Kingdom tops the list). Average tuition in South Korea, which has sent fewer students to the United States every year since 2012, is less than $8,500 at private colleges and less than $5,000 at public colleges. . In China, America’s leading exporter of international students, students can attend a public college for between $3,000 and $10,000.
Some countries extend their tolerance rates to non-citizens. German universities are already free for international students, although in 2017 the state of Baden-Württemberg began charging non-EU students a fee of $3,400 a year — a bargain compared to American counterparts. Tuition for international students in France will also rise to $3,200 per year starting in fall 2019.
In the United States, few schools offer large discounts to international students. Of the ‘650 Top Colleges, only five – Princeton (the No. 1 school for international students), Yale (No. 2), MIT (No. 3), Harvard (No. 4) and Amherst (No. 8) in both. blind admissions are required and comprehensive financial aid policies for international students. To help pay, some foreign governments invest in scholarship programs that promote international study. Between 2011 and 2016, the Brazilian government funded annual training programs in STEM fields in the United States as part of its Science Mobility Program, which is part of a larger initiative to send 100,000 students internationally. In Saudi Arabia, the 15-year-old King Abdullah Scholarship Program spends billions of dollars each year to send students to American colleges and universities.
But both programs were cut. In 2016, Saudi Arabia increased restrictions on the King Abdullah program, limiting the pool of American schools to which they sent students. In the 2016-17 school year, 14% more Saudi students came to study in the United States than the previous year. The end of the Brazilian academic exchange program in 2016 was followed by a 45% drop in Brazilian students studying in the United States between 2014-15 and 2016-17, although the numbers rebounded by 12% in 2017.
Several of the most important feeder countries have a major impact on the growth of the international student population. Saudi Arabia and Brazil are the fourth and tenth highest sources of international students coming to the United States, respectively. There were almost 25,000 fewer students from both countries combined in 2017-18 than there were in 2014-15.
Despite external factors, most prestigious schools are getting better at helping international students get their degrees. Between 2007 and 2017, the average graduation rate for international students increased six percentage points to 76.8% in the 293 schools considered for our list (all schools in the list of universities with sufficient data whose university body is at least 5% international). This is an average of those schools of 75% for all high school students.

But aside from basic metrics collected by the federal government, such as graduation and enrollment trends, applicants looking to invest in American education don’t have much data on which to base their decisions. Admissions experts in the field are not aware of large databases that address topics such as financial aid for international students or student salaries. And while some schools keep these numbers, international applicants are sometimes so caught up in a college’s name that they avoid the more important questions about its ROI.
“International students should find their applications at the universities they attend to help them achieve their career goals,” Barros said, “and especially get demographic data.” A job in the United States of the degree program they are interested in, if they want to stay in the United States.”
